Nasarawa State First Lady, Silifat Abdullahi Sule, has expressed dismay in the attitudes of some women towards the education of the girl-child in the country.
Mrs. Sule said women have an opportune time to train their girl-child as efforts continue to be stepped up to address age-long barriers that stunted girl-child enrolment into school for quality education.
The First Lady made this known when she hosted the Project Coordinator of the Adolescent Girls Initiative for Learning and Empowerment (AGILE) Nasarawa State at the Government House in Lafia, Tuesday.
She called on women to wake up from their slumber to complement the efforts of government and development partners to achieve results, assuring the AGILE delegation of prompt support and co-operation to change the narrative.
According to her, she was impressed with the commitment of AGILE Nasarawa for seriously advocating the need for the success of the girl-child programme to ensure quality and accessible education.
She commended Nigeria’s First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, whom she said is investing hugely in the Renewed Hope Agenda to fight the barriers impeding girl-child education for optimal performance.
In her opening remarks, Project Coordinator of AGILE in Nasarawa State, Aisha Isoga said the Project aims at fighting the impediments to girl-child education and empowerment particularly at the secondary level of education, maintaining that more deliberate actions by stakeholders are advocated for to nip the scourge in the bud.
Isoga added that barriers such as poverty, hunger and traditional practices are some social impediments crippling quality and accessible education of the girl-child.
She stressed that Nasarawa is one of the eighty states selected by the World Bank to support in the implementation of the programme, noting that the three components of the AGILE Project which include Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH), Advocacy and System Strengthening are key in the full realization of the Project’s goals.
